From Logic’s Ambassador to the Marketplace: The two P2s

Sales-suitWhile few people who know me would describe Al Carpinelli as quiet, I’ve yet to offer my input to our blog until now. In a recent kitchen chat, our lead designer, Fatimah, kindly suggested a focus on the ingredients of my success as the most senior business developer at the company.

I immediately thought of the two P2s that I live by as Logic Solutions?ambassador to the marketplace. The first P2 is patience and persistence. During my 15 years as a representative for Logic, I’ve concluded that being patient with prospective clients is critical but it also has to be combined with persistence. I know that our clients make their vendor partner selections for their own reasons and on their own time frame, not ours, which means I need to be patient. Simply put, when that time comes, I hope that I’ve been effective in putting Logic at the “top of their minds?to be considered for the project. To achieve this requires persistence.

I ask myself, have we at Logic “checked in?frequently enough with the client to know when their decision point is approaching and attentive enough to clearly understand their project needs and vision for success? Persistence doesn’t equate to calling them every week as I wouldn’t want to be viewed as annoying or overly aggressive. The balance point between frequency vs. harassment can vary from one prospective client to another, so this part is never a certainty.

It is so helpful when a potential client tells me when would be a good day to check back in. With this information, I can set a reminder and be sure to check in with them on the day of, never sooner. If we strike the balance here, we’ll likely have the opportunity to be selected.

The second P2 is privilege and pleasure. I sincerely consider my role as Logic’s sales representative to be a great privilege. Not many people are given this charter to be out in front, to tell our story, and to welcome new clients to our door. I have been known to brag to coworkers that I have “the most fun and exciting job in the company?and I mean it sincerely. I am so happy to launch out every day to network in the business community, engage with companies, hear their challenges, and collaborate on possible solutions. This is the greatest reward, the essence of why I take such great pleasure and pride in being a pivotal part of the Logic Solutions team.

It’s no coincidence that the two biggest names in technology held product launches this week. Here’s the take away from Microsoft’s event.

1. Windows 8 is Finally Here 

Microsoft LogoThis isn’t the rehashed Windows look that you’ve been acquainted with since ’95 (the iconic “Start?button is no more). Windows 8 has been completely overhauled with the modern Metro interface. 

Metro is based on a grid of interactive touch-enabled tiles that display “live?apps. For example, you can have a tile that shows up-to-the-minute weather, while another tile hosts your email.

There’s no need to fret if you do not want to enter a touch-only world. Windows 8 also offers a traditional desktop mode similar to Windows 7 in lieu of Metro.

In addition, Microsoft engineered Windows RT, a slimmed down Windows 8 optimized for netbooks and tablets. This is fundamentally Microsoft’s version of Apple’s iOS: Windows RT will only run preinstalled and/or approved apps from the Windows Store (!! see below).

Microsoft wants you to use it: an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro costs only $39.99.

2. The Surface Has Emerged

Microsoft SurfaceAt long last we see Microsoft’s answer to the highly successful iPad. At 10.6″ this tablet includes all the external features that have been missing from the iPad, including a microSD slot, USB and micro-HDMI ports.

The Surface runs on Windows RT with a full Intel-based Windows 8 Surface “coming soon.?/p>

Microsoft made it clear that it wants users to experience the Surface with the optional Touch Cover or Type Cover add-ons to take advantage of the kickstand—it’s been the focal point of their ad campaign.

The Surface is available now starting at $499 for 32GB plus an additional $119.99 for Touch Cover or $129.99 for Type Cover.

3. Windows Store

Microsoft enters the app world as an underdog with the new Windows Store. Users of Windows 8 and RT will have immediate access to thousands of apps on the Windows Store (available in 231 markets). This presents a new opportunity for developers as Microsoft hopes that the 670 million Windows 7 users will upgrade to the newest OS.

Technology should be viewed as a boon for sales personnel, rather than a bogeyman (as it is often portrayed). Enterprise mobile technology in particular is spawning a new breed of highly efficient salespeople who perform better without putting in longer hours that raise the cost of sales.

It bears repeating (and we’ve repeated this fairly regularly in our blog): mobility eliminates the wasted time a field rep spends recording and reporting data from the field to HQ, whether through paper, phone, or inconvenient desktop processes.

Mobile sales automation solutions are configured to equip sales reps with a wide range of tools to facilitate and streamline sales. These tools may include an ordering solution offering backend systems integration, a customizable eCatalog to display products at the point-of-sale, and a library of up-to-the-minute sales and marketing materials (presentations, videos, brochures, price sheets, customer info, etc.). Solutions can also leverage a tablet’s native software in order to geo-locate leads, for example.

You might be able to find all these things in a single dynamic solution.

Admittedly, we’re slightly biased when it comes to naming the best sales automation app. However, it’s noteworthy that it is possible for the same mobile application that is employed to facilitate the sales process can also cater to the requirements of sales supervisors and other executives.

By offering a two-way channel of communication between the field and HQ, mobile apps provide decision-makers with immediate access to key information. For instance, a sales manager can view real-time information from reps, such as a synopsis of a meeting with a prospect or the details of a customer order. 

This instantly transmitted data—especially when integrated with ERP systems—provides a granular view of big-picture sales metrics (i.e. who is buying, what is selling, etc.) that will inform better business development decisions.

What’s Up With Jimmy


Shin-Ming-ShyuFor every popular internet technology in the U.S., there is a similar one in China. There is Baidu which is comparable to Google. Tao Bao is similar to eBay, and Weibo works a lot like Twitter. These technologies have fundamentally changed the way we live. Weibo’s tremendous popularity certainly has helped me in the most recent trip to China, a story I just had to share.

Shin-Ming Shyu, a Professor of Architecture at Eastern Michigan University who I have known for over 20 years, told me that he wished to find his family roots in China.  Shin-Ming was born and raised in Taiwan, but both his parents immigrated there from mainland China in 1949, during the civil war. The war divided the Chinese people for an entire generation. My father, who also left for Taiwan from China before the war, went back in 1978 to see his dying mother. That trip forced my father to be in exile for years until Taiwan and China opened direct communication.

Unfortunately, Shin-Ming’s father passed away forty years ago, before he was able to reunite with his family. Shin-Ming promised his father that he would go back to China someday to find his roots. I told Shin-Ming that I would like to try to go to Szechuan with him to give it a try. It sounded like another adventure that “Curious Jimmy” can’t pass up.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA“The New Science of Sales Force Productivity?(Harvard Business Review) addresses a pain point common to many sales managers—how many new reps should one hire to achieve increased targets set by corporate?  The authors posit that by taking a scientific approach to sales processes rather than trying to hire costly rainmakers, a company can dramatically increase the productivity of all its sales people.

Inadequate or outdated tools and unaddressed process barriers often result in sales reps spending too much time doing things that aren’t selling.  Instead, the “TOPSales Approach” names optimized tools (such as new technology) and enhancements in sales force deployment as key factors thatvastly improve a sales team’s efficacy in selling.

In fact, we’ve seen multiple studies that name “time spent not selling” as the major impediment to sales success.  The aforementioned study states that often more than half of a sales rep’s total daily work hours involve “non-customer-facing time? while others claim that as much 75% of a work day is wasted on unnecessarily tedious administrative tasks!

The researchers also recount a remarkable case study: Cisco once tasked its IT department with reducing reps?nonselling time by only a few hours a week.  The team achieved that modest goal, which led to several hundred million dollars in additional revenue.

One of the most interesting results of employing a scientific approach to improving sales is that productivity was most greatly increased among the lower-ranked performers: as much as a 200% jump in output in some cases.

mod-furniture-ipad-home-011012In my last post, I discussed the startling finding that only 4% of sales people in the US sell 94% of all goods and services.  Making a huge investment (of both money and time) in new personnel won’t alter that ratio.  However, you may be able to significantly narrow your sales performance gap, and subsequently increase your sales yield, by providing technology that streamlines processes, allowing for much more (and much better) customer-facing time.

8020At some point of a life in business, all individuals learn the Pareto Principle—if you haven’t heard of it yet, then today’s that point for you.  Basically, it states that for a given event, 80% of the effects are a result of 20% of the causes.  The ?strong>80/20 rule
?as it is better known, was proposed by economist and sociologist Vilfredo Pareto.  Pareto’s study of income distribution in the analysis of individuals’ choices pioneered what we know today as “microeconomics?

The 80/20 rule is applicable to many situations:

  • The best 20% of your clients supply you with 80% of your profit
  • 80% of all complaints arise from 20% of your customer base
  • Fixing 20% of reported software bugs eliminates 80% of crashes
  • 80% of B2B transactions are the result of relationships, 20%…are not
  • and so on

The principle is surprisingly accurate, and as such, often misappropriated.  In fact, research indicates a dramatic discrepancy in the numbers when we look at sales practices.

Several discrete studies, including ones by Harvard University and Gallup, indicate that approximately 4% of sales people in the United States sell 94% of all goods and services!  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are roughly 2.8 million non-retail sales people in the U.S., which means that a paltry 112,000 of them are actually selling effectively.

Top sales people are supported by a strong process that includes best practice branding, marketing, and sales tools.  A salesperson’s methods must keep up with today’s instant communication (and gratification) demands of customers in order to remain in the top 4% of producers.
